Innovative Educational Models
Empowering College and Career Readiness
At San Jose Schools, we inspire success through innovative educational models. Our team is committed to providing quality education that empowers students to graduate from secondary school career and college ready. It is important to us that young people be in demand by institutions of higher education and by Northeast Florida employers.
San Jose Schools began with a single charter school in 2013, which was founded by its nonprofit managing board, River City Education Organization Inc. The school's theme was college preparation, and it served students who were struggling in their neighborhood schools.
San Jose Prep implemented a requirement called "Pathway to Success" to make certain every student would leave with a preset post-secondary plan. Investment of resources, a strong educational team and community involvement have paid off: San Jose Prep has demonstrated a 100-percent graduation rate for three consecutive years. This has been possible despite the school community's high level of economic need. In fact, there are students graduating each year with a high school diploma and an associate of arts degree at the same time.
In 2020, the managing board opened San Jose Primary on the same campus for grades K-5 with a focus on Authentic Learning, Project-Based Learning and hands-on STEAM Education.
In 2021, an early learning center was developed on an adjacent property in the Mandarin neighborhood: The Padawan Academy opened as a private early learning center for children age 1 through VPK. The Padawan Academy, San Jose Primary and San Jose Prep are building a reciprocal and synergistic relationship in regards to community, enrollment and outcomes.
Also in 2021, San Jose Prep launched Career Academies in Information Technology, Fine Arts and Theater, Early Childhood Education and Culinary Arts. This addition is part of our promise to help young people graduate high school career and college ready.
San Jose Schools' single-campus model offers a small-school environment with large-school opportunities for pre-K through grade 12. Parent feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Data points, including graduation rate, school grades, family retention rate (re-enrollment), college readiness scores and academic benchmarks, demonstrate this to be an effective model.
This model will be replicated in the coming years on the Westside and Northside of Jacksonville.
San Jose Early College at Cecil opens its state-of-the art campus on the Westside in August 2022. Enrollment is open for grades 9-12. Career Academies will launch in Aviation, Information Technology, Financial Technology and Culinary Arts. Our community partners will include Florida State College of Jacksonville and private firms located on the Westside that specialize in aviation, logistics, hospitality and finance.
San Jose Cyber Academy opened its doors virtually in August 2021 to meet the demand for high quality, convenient, tuition-free, online K-12 programs. The Cyber Academy meets all requirements set by the Florida Department of Education, and it was chartered through Duval County. Families can take advantage of full-time or part-time enrollment; certified instructors and student services; individualized pathways to graduation; and standard, honors, AP and elective courses. The Cyber Academy also offers a free GED program for those who are looking to come back to school. Enrollment is ongoing.
