A charter school is one of your public school options. Charter schools are privately managed but publicly funded, which also means they are tuition free for your child! Charter schools are given a certain level of flexibility compared to traditional public schools, so they have the opportunity to be an enterprise for educational innovation in today’s quickly evolving academic environment.
Additional options through the Duval County school system include: Public “neighborhood” schools, magnet schools, private schools, virtual school, home school and dropout prevention centers. See more about School Choice in Duval County at https://dcps.duvalschools.org/schoolchoice.
Many families in Northeast Florida commute for work in Jacksonville from the surrounding counties. For example, you may work on Jacksonville’s Southside but live in Clay County. Long distances between your workplace and your child’s school can make transportation and childcare very difficult. One of the benefits of choosing the San Jose Schools for your child in grades 6-12 is that you can live in any of the surrounding counties and still apply (link to application for enrollment) to attend our convenient single location.
San Jose Academy and Preparatory High School are located centrally to where many people live and work, close to I-95, I-295, Philips Highway and San Jose Blvd. Find our campus at 4072 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
Our staff members take their responsibility of innovating in education seriously.
At the Middle School we engage our students by using an effective combination of teacher-directed and technology-driven instruction. Our small-school environment makes incoming sixth graders feel at greater ease than when they enter some of the larger middle schools of Duval County. Plus, the friendships they develop in middle school can last all the way through 12th grade!
Our youngest students rave about the fact that they don’t have to wait for high school to participate in enrichment programs like drama and robotics. These are more than clubs at our school. They are opportunities to personally grow, gain confidence and learn skills that go well beyond the normal classroom walls.
In the Preparatory High School, we continuously innovate new ways to make early college and higher-level high school diplomas accessible. Our school population is such that 1 in 5 students are English Language Learners. A 1:1 technology ratio and a well-developed Student Services Department improves our high school students’ opportunities for graduation.
We aim for each of our students to succeed by taking their best educational path at the pace that best fits their needs and goals. Examples of this include our Early College program, which starts in 8th grade and allows some of our students to graduate high school with a college associates (2-year) degree. Also, our AP Capstone Diploma, which provides greater “scaffolding” to the traditional Advanced Placement Program. This means more students can gain college credits and confidence on college-level work. San Jose Schools’ AP Capstone Diploma is unique in Duval County.
Our campus has been featured in numerous media reports for its cutting-edge security measures.
San Jose Academy & Preparatory High School has on campus 4 full-time trained “Guardians.” The Guardians Program is offered by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and it provides psychological and arms training for particular staff so they are especially able to handle an emergency situation.
The real key to success is prevention. Critical elements that are central to your child's safety include:
• a licensed mental health provider on site at all times
• we offer a cyber civics class for all of our middle school students
• a Student Services Department that grew from one to four staff members in the current school year
• 25 new cameras for a total of 100 cameras on campus
• new key control access install at all doors
• a new panic system that communicates directly with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office
• communication directly with parents via the SanJoseSchools.org website and our unique phone app
• our small-school environment means that our staff really knows your child!
